Radio Monte Carlo begins FM service in Kuwait

KUWAIT CITY, April 21 2004 (AFP) - Radio Monte Carlo (RMC) is scheduled to start broadcasting on the FM frequency in Kuwait on May 4, the French ambassador to the emirate said Wednesday.

A contract was signed between the two governments to allow the popular radio station to broadcast around the clock, like several other US and British stations, said Claude Losguardi.

British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) and the US-government's radio Sawa both broadcast in Arabic to Kuwait, while the Voice of America and a couple of US army stations also air programmes in English.

RMC was established in 1972 but joined Radio France Internationale in 1996 and currently broadcasts on FM in nine cities in six Arab countries, including the Gulf Arab states of Bahrain and Qatar.

The station, which broadcasts in Arabic, says it has 15 million listeners in the Middle East and boasts of more than 80 journalists, reporters and correspondents covering the entire world, as well as a dozen presenters.
